What gives rise to these particular articles? With the advent of social media and political divisiveness, how are we to adequately respond to the despotism of modern American culture? How are we to expose the demagogues of our society? A return back to the essential teachings of Holy Writ and what many men have been called up to speak on, as moved by the power and illumination of the Holy Spirit.
Therefore, this introductory article is the beginning of many articles on the nature of how our own sinful nation is in the hands of an angry God. It is a call for all Christians to stand in their convictions and to become a true light unto all who are attempting to find their way through the darkness of our age. These articles are not published to concur with public opinion. They are not to tickle the ears of those who have established their own teachers and have turned themselves away from sound doctrine 1. Instead, these articles are to express the truth as to what the word of God has declared and where our nation is heading. Truth that fellow citizens of the United States of America ought to become deeply concerned about regarding the welfare of our beloved country.
The Matter of Truth
First, when it concerns the nature of facts, it is not being spoken of in a manner to tickle ears or provide some form of entertainment.2 It is a matter of speaking frankly and honestly to one another. This is how we speak truthfully and must speak truthfully in our day and time. Citing the German philosopher Goethe, Ezra Taft Benson quotes: “Truth must be repeated again and again because error is constantly being preached round about.”3 Today, error is being broadcast through various venues. Not only are the errors of cultural despotism is being preached about today against Christian believers in this nation, many of those errors have enslaved the foolish into believing they are of themselves truth: “None are so hopelessly enslaved, as those who falsely believe they are free. The truth has been kept from the depth of their minds by masters who rule them with lies. They feed them on falsehoods till wrong looks like right in their eyes”4 Our very own culture has demonized the truth of Christian principles and liberties and heralded praise for wickedness and oppression. The scriptures state:
But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these. For among them are those who enter into households and captivate weak women weighed down with sins, led on by various impulses, always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose truth, men of depraved mind, rejected in regard to the faith. But they will not make further progress; for their folly will be obvious to all …5
Hence, we are seeing the vile fruit of unrighteousness bearing forth in our nation and have become a sinful nation in the hands of an angry God. Truth of God has not only been replaced, it is being repressed by depraved men and women today. Their call to liberty and freedom are nothing more than the spiritual appetite of entitlement that is slavery to sin and bondage of misery. It is our duty as fellow Christians to continue to lift up our voice, to share the message of the Gospel, and to preach Christ crucified, resurrected and glorified.
While we are the bearer of the Good News that Christ came to set forth the captives and liberate them from the bondage of sin and death6; we also are the bearer of bad news to those whose hearts are closed and minds narrowed. The truth that we bring to discuss in the marketplace of ideas are unpopular. We must, therefore, bring to light the truth every day – regardless of how unpopular the truth is in our culture and society. What then is the truth that we must valiantly speak openly about? We must speak out against the soul destroying depravity of our modern culture. We must speak out against the government's entertainment with socialistic ideals. We must speak out against the persecution and oppression of Christian principles and religious expression that our constitution protects. Not only in our own national culture and society, but for all other culture and societies where Christian principles, truths, and religious expressions are systematically being destroyed by demagogues. We are to speak out frankly and honestly with facts.
We must raise the title of liberty for all
Holding fast to the founding father's vision, we have inherited their belief and wisdom in how the people are to govern themselves. We are the sole protectors of that inheritance and it is time we stand to defend it. It is time we stand and proclaim the title of liberty7 for one and in our culture where true freedom and liberty have adequately been expressed. Otherwise, we have done a disservice to our current and future generations by remaining steadfast in silence. As Christians, we have the right to defend the principles of truth against the philosophy of error. We have a right to expose the fallacy of modern political correctness and remain steadfast in bold faith proclaiming the Good News to the captives. In other words “... it behooves patriotic [Christian] citizens – such as you – to meet together to seriously consider present conditions in our beloved nation” and that it is further “...imperative that American citizens [themselves] become alerted and informed regarding the threat to our welfare, happiness and freedom.”8
Yes, our very own welfare is at stake here in this nation. We are the caretakers of sound principles this country was founded upon and we must pick up and fight the battle that otherwise will ensnare this nation to greater depths of depravity and vileness. The call to restore sound principles and liberties are the quintessential aspect of proving that our nation is sovereign and holds fast to the teachings of a sovereign just and merciful God. Let those who come against the truth of scripture, sound principles of these liberties cast themselves against the two-edged sword of truth. For they shall wail and gnash their teeth in disgust. The title of liberty that we must raise is the Constitution of this Great Nation, penned by men with courage and wisdom who founded and proclaimed a new form of Government that was not based on oppression and tyranny. A government based on sound principles and liberties of the Christian faith. To the point, Alexander Hamilton wrote:
In the course of the preceding observations, I have had an eye, my fellow-citizens, to putting you upon your guard against all attempts, from whatever quarter, to influence your decision in a matter of the utmost moment to your welfare, by any impressions other than those which may result from the evidence of truth. You will, no doubt, at the same time, have collected from the general scope of them, that they proceed from a source not unfriendly to the new Constitution. Yes, my countrymen, I own to you that, after having given it an attentive consideration, I am clearly of opinion it is your interest to adopt it. I am convinced that this is the safest course for your liberty, your dignity, and your happiness.9
Whether others willfully choose of their own volition to come under the banner of the title of liberty and align themselves in proclaiming the good news of liberation and freedom that is only found in Jesus Christ; or choose for themselves the error of modern convention and political correctness that leads down the trodden path of slavery and death – it is not for us to judge, but for us to proclaim truth that sets the captives free.
Purpose of this series
Now, moving forward to the purpose for this particular series. A sinful nation in the hands of an angry God is to explore the slippery slope our nation is placed. Based off the classical sermon of Jonathan Edwards10. Each article will explore how culturally relevant the scriptures are in where our nation has aligned itself. It is a call to bring to remembrance of the heritage our founding fathers provided in proclaiming this nation a republic of liberty and freedom to all men. It is to reveal the nature of impending destruction of those who continue to wander along the path of immoral decadence, led by demagogues that have created the cultural atmosphere that we are now facing. It is to expose the reality that our nation has cultivated and brought forth bitter and poisonous fruit because we have become a nation void of counsel, lacking understanding in them godly counsel and are much like the wicked Israelites of ancient times.
Four principles will be explored throughout the forthcoming articles:
- Our nation has always been exposed to destruction, as one stands or walks in slippery places is always exposed to fall. This implies the particular manner of our nation's destruction that comes upon them, as represented by their foot's sliding.
- It implies that our nation has always been exposed to sudden unexpected destruction. Every moment one walks in slippery places, one is liable to fall; not able to foresee one moment whether he shall stand or fall the next; and when that nation falls, it falls at once, without warning.
- It implies that our nation is liable to fall of its own accord, without being thrown down by the hand of another. As he that stands or walks on slippery ground, needs nothing but his own weight to throw him down.
- The reason our nation has not yet fallen already, and don't fall now, is only that God's appointed time is not come. For it is said that when that due time does come, or that appointed time arrives, their foot shall slide. Then they shall be left to fall as they are inclined by their own weight. God won't hold them up in these slippery places any longer, but will let them go; and then, at that very instant, they shall fall into destruction; as he that stands in such slippery declining ground on the edge of a pit that he can't stand alone, when he is let go he immediately falls and is lost.
People today may disagree with these frank and honest facts, however, it is their own disagreement that they must wrestle with against the Holy Writ. Therefore, let us take up our call as Christians, don the armor of God, and know that we are not wrestling with flesh, but powers and principalities in our modern culture and society11. We must awaken from our slumber and raise the title of liberty and preach the Gospel – no matter the rage from those who are in opposition to the truth. For Christ has already claimed victory over sin and death.
1For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths. 2 Timothy 4:3-4
3“Truth has to be repeated constantly, because Error also is being preached all the time, and not just by a few, but by the multitude. In the Press and Encyclopeaedias (sic), in Schools and Universities, everywhere Error holds sway, feeling happy and comfortable in the knowledge of having Majority on its side.” ~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (b. 1749 – d. 1832).
6“The Spirit of the Lord is Upon me, because he anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord” ~ Luke 4: 18-19; Isaiah 61:1-3 further provides this: “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the afflicted; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to captives and freedom to prisoners; to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn, to grant those who mourn in Zion, Giving them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.
7Whether one accepts or does not accept the Book of Mormon as Scripture, the power of the passage in Alma 46:10-24 speaks about what we are experiencing today in our culture and society. This is true, considering the present demagogues:
“Yea, we see that Amalickiah, because he was a man of cunning device and a man of many flattering words, that he led away the hearts of many people to do wickedly; yea, and to seek to destroy the church of God, and to destroy the foundation of liberty which God had granted unto them, or which blessing God had sent upon the face of the land for the righteous’ sake. And now it came to pass that when Moroni, who was the chief commander of the armies of the Nephites, had heard of these dissensions, he was angry with Amalickiah. And it came to pass that he rent his coat; and he took a piece thereof, and wrote upon it—In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children—and he fastened it upon the end of a pole. And he fastened on his head-plate, and his breastplate, and his shields, and girded on his armor about his loins; and he took the pole, which had on the end thereof his rent coat, (and he called it the title of liberty) and he bowed himself to the earth, and he prayed mightily unto his God for the blessings of liberty to rest upon his brethren, so long as there should a band of Christians remain to possess the land— For thus were all the true believers of Christ, who belonged to the church of God, called by those who did not belong to the church. And those who did belong to the church were faithful; yea, all those who were true believers in Christ took upon them, gladly, the name of Christ, or Christians as they were called, because of their belief in Christ who should come. And therefore, at this time, Moroni prayed that the cause of the Christians, and the freedom of the land might be favored. And it came to pass that when he had poured out his soul to God, he named all the land which was south of the land Desolation, yea, and in fine, all the land, both on the north and on the south—A chosen land, and the land of liberty. And he said: Surely God shall not suffer that we, who are despised because we take upon us the name of Christ, shall be trodden down and destroyed, until we bring it upon us by our own transgressions. And when Moroni had said these words, he went forth among the people, waving the rent part of his garment in the air, that all might see the writing which he had written upon the rent part, and crying with a loud voice, saying: Behold, whosoever will maintain this title upon the land, let them come forth in the strength of the Lord, and enter into a covenant that they will maintain their rights, and their religion, that the Lord God may bless them. And it came to pass that when Moroni had proclaimed these words, behold, the people came running together with their armor girded about their loins, rending their garments in token, or as a covenant, that they would not forsake the Lord their God; or, in other words, if they should transgress the commandments of God, or fall into transgression, and be ashamed to take upon them the name of Christ, the Lord should rend them even as they had rent their garments. Now this was the covenant which they made, and they cast their garments at the feet of Moroni, saying: We covenant with our God, that we shall be destroyed, even as our brethren in the land northward, if we shall fall into transgression; yea, he may cast us at the feet of our enemies, even as we have cast our garments at thy feet to be trodden under foot, if we shall fall into transgression. Moroni said unto them: Behold, we are a remnant of the seed of Jacob; yea, we are a remnant of the seed of Joseph, whose coat was rent by his brethren into many pieces; yea, and now behold, let us remember to keep the commandments of God, or our garments shall be rent by our brethren, and we be cast into prison, or be sold, or be slain. Yea, let us preserve our liberty as a remnant of Joseph; yea, let us remember the words of Jacob, before his death, for behold, he saw that a part of the remnant of the coat of Joseph was preserved and had not decayed.”
9Alexander Hamilton wrote to the Independent Journal and published an article to the residents of New York State. This is in the Federalist Papers regarding Government and the New Constitution of the newly formed United States of America.
11See Ephesians 6:10-18: “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,”
